Researchers for Climate Justice: diamo voce alla giustizia climatica

La pandemia ha rimesso la scienza al centro della scena mediatica. Eppure, la visibilità che essa ha avuto sui quotidiani e negli studi televisivi spesso ha corrisposto a una spettacolarizzazione della ricerca, e non ad un suo nuovo spazio nelle nostre comunità.
A Bologna, viviamo il bisogno di dare risposte nuove a problemi radicati nella storia sociale, economica e politica della città, ma anche a questioni emerse con le ultime crisi. Da una parte, subiamo la povertà di un dibattito pubblico sempre più schiacciato sulla mera promozione di chi governa il territorio: è la logica del selfie, del contenuto finalizzato al social media, della sola ricerca delle poche parole capaci di creare un effimero applauso. D’altra parte, però, ci rendiamo conto che noi stesse/i spesso paghiamo l’assenza di strumenti interpretativi capaci di darci chiavi di lettura alternative e innovative, e di proporre alla città e a chi la abita suggestioni credibili e utopie realizzabili.

Non pensiamo sia sufficiente raccogliere finanziamenti per la ‘Città della Conoscenza’ per far intrecciare e meticciare i tanti pensieri critici che vivono Bologna, o la attraversano per studio e per lavoro. Pensiamo, invece, che ci sia bisogno di nuovi spazi di confronto e ricerca capaci di far discutere le e i tante/i giovani ricercatrici e ricercatori che nella nostra città studiano, e al futuro della nostra città vorrebbero contribuire.
Pensiamo, anche, che questo non debba essere uno spazio esclusivo, attraversato soltanto da coloro che vivono i luoghi istituzionali della scienza, ma che quello che dobbiamo ambire a costruire possa essere un laboratorio sociale interdisciplinare nel quale la ‘scienza della strada’, fatta di saperi ed esperienze collettive, si contamini con la ‘scienza del laboratorio’, cercando di portare nel nostro vivere quotidiano idee concrete e realizzabili per la nostra città.
Proponiamo che lo spazio semantico nel quale intersecare questi ragionamenti sia quello della giustizia climatica. Il riscaldamento globale, infatti, è la più grande sfida che l’umanità abbia mai dovuto affrontare, ma riteniamo inutile ‘salvare il Pianeta’ per continuare a vivere il ‘business as usual’: sarà rivoluzione climatica soltanto quella che, assieme alla tutela del territorio e della biodiversità, sarà capace di lottare per i diritti sociali, il transfemminismo, la dignità individuale e sociale del lavoro, la gestione collettiva dei beni comuni. Da questo punto di vista, ‘cambiare sistema, non il clima’ è il nostro punto di partenza.
A Bologna, oggi, la contraddizione più grande che rappresenta metaforicamente quanto appena scritto è l’allargamento del Passante di Mezzo: questo progetto rappresenta il primato del PIL sul futuro delle nuove generazioni, l’asservimento delle istituzioni agli interessi economici, un modello di commercio nel quale i profitti sono l’unica scala di misura del successo, l’indifferenza per la salute delle/dei cittadine/i e per i costi climatici degli investimenti approvati. Vorremmo partire da questa contraddizione, per poi allargare il nostro sguardo alle tante questioni sulle quali ci interroghiamo ogni giorno.
Possiamo aspettare di vedere se Bologna sarà all’altezza della transizione climatica, oppure provare a costruire i pilastri teorici, tecnici, sociali e pratici sui quali sfidare le istituzioni e costruire le alternative. Se vuoi partecipare scrivici a researchers@bolognaforclimatejustice.it.
Researchers for Climate Justice: let's give voice to climate justice
The pandemic has put science back at the center of the media. Yet, the attention that it received in newspapers and television was more connected to a spectacularization of the research instead of creating a new space in our communities.
In Bologna, we are experiencing the need to give new answers to problems rooted in the city’s social, economic and political history, but also to issues that have emerged with the latest crises. On one hand the public debate is increasingly focused on the mere promotion of those who govern the territory which aim at creating content for social media and find a few words capable of creating ephemeral applauses. On the other hand, however, we realize that we often pay for the lack of interpretative tools which could give us alternative and innovative interpretations, aiming at proposing credible suggestions and feasible utopias to the city and its inhabitants.
We don’t think it’s enough to find fundings for the ‘City of Knowledge’ to be able to merge and mix inhabitants’, students’ and wokers’ critical thoughts. Ideed, we think that there is the need to create new spaces for discussion and research, capable of creating a discussion among young researchers who study in our city in order to discuss and contribute to the future of our city. We also think that this shouldn’t be an exclusive space, crossed only by those who live in the institutional places of science, but that what we should aspire to build an interdisciplinary social laboratory in which the ‘science of the street’, made up of knowledge and collective experiences, contaminates with the ‘laboratory science’, trying to bring into our lives concrete and feasible ideas for our city.
We think that climate justice is the right place to intersect our thoughts. Indeed, global warming is the greatest challenge that humanity has ever faced, but we believe it is useless to ‘save the planet’ while living ‘business as usual’: only climate revolution will be the one, together with the protection of territory and biodiversity, capable of fighting for social justie, transfeminism, individual and social dignity of work and collective management of common goods. From this point of view, ‘change the system, not the climate’ is our starting point. In Bologna right now, the biggest contradiction that represents what has just been written is the enlargement of the Passante di Mezzo: this project represents the bigger importance of GDP over the future of the new generations, the enslavement of institutions to economic interests, in which profits are the only measure of success, indifference to the health of citizens and to the climate costs of approved investments. We would like to start from this contradiction, and then broaden our gaze to the many questions we ask ourselves every day.
